The Advanced Placement (AP) 2-D Art and Design course is a comprehensive program designed for high school students who are interested in pursuing advanced study in two-dimensional art and design. This course emphasizes the development of students' creative, conceptual, and technical skills through a variety of media and approaches, including but not limited to graphic design, photography, collage, printmaking, and fashion illustration. The curriculum is structured to encourage students to produce art that reflects their individual ideas and skills, and is informed by their understanding of artistic processes and historical and contemporary art practices.
Prohibition of AI Tools:
A significant policy within the AP 2-D Art and Design course is the strict prohibition against the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools at any stage of the creative process. This policy underscores the College Board's commitment to originality, personal expression, and the educational value of the manual and intellectual engagement with art and design practices.
Skills Development:
The course aims to cultivate a range of skills essential for artistic development and expression:
Investigation of Materials, Processes, and Ideas: Students are encouraged to explore and critically engage with various materials, techniques, and conceptual approaches. This includes conducting research, experimenting with different media, and reflecting on the historical, cultural, and conceptual contexts of art and design.
Practice and Experimentation: A core part of the learning process involves continuous practice, experimentation, and revision. Students learn to embrace the iterative nature of art-making, using feedback and self-assessment to refine their work and techniques.
Articulation of Ideas: Effective communication about one's own work and the work of others is cultivated. Students develop the ability to discuss the concepts, materials, and processes in their work and to critique art and design with insight and understanding.
Course Structure and Content:
The AP 2-D Art and Design course is organized around three central themes or "Big Ideas":
Investigate: This theme focuses on the exploration of artistic intentions and the selection of materials and processes that best express those intentions. Students learn to draw inspiration from their experiences, cultural heritage, and observations, as well as from the study of artists and art movements.
Make: Central to the course is the act of creation. Students are guided through the process of conceptualizing and producing art, from initial ideation to the execution of final pieces. This includes mastering the elements and principles of design, understanding color theory, composition, and developing a personal style and voice.
Present: The presentation of artwork is treated as an integral part of the artistic process. Students learn to curate and display their work thoughtfully, considering the impact of presentation on the viewer's experience. This includes writing artist statements, documenting work professionally, and engaging with audiences.
Equivalency, Prerequisites, and Portfolio Submission:
College Equivalency: This course is equivalent to an introductory college-level course in 2-D art and design.
Prerequisites: There are no formal prerequisites; however, prior experience in art and design can be beneficial.
Portfolio Submission: The culmination of the course is the submission of a digital portfolio by May 10, 2024, at 8 PM ET. The portfolio is a critical component of the AP assessment, showcasing the student's ability to integrate technique, concept, and presentation.
The AP 2-D Art and Design course offers students a rigorous and engaging opportunity to deepen their understanding and practice of art and design. Through a structured curriculum that emphasizes investigation, creation, and presentation, students develop the skills and confidence to express their ideas and achieve their creative potential.
